Job Description of a Sustainment Support Manager

This Sustainment Support Manager’s role will be responsible for the coordination of technical and information systems within Operations. They will need to direct staff, determine necessary technology advances and educate employees on the use of software and hardware used in our day-to-day operations. Support manager positions often require a bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering as well as several years’ job experience in information technology in the areas of application development, implementation and sustainment. Sustainment Support Managers work closely with other management staff and departments to determine and implement specific technical needs and priorities related to product fixes and enhancements. Overseeing the sustainment and software support team, this role is responsible for defining hand off protocols between development, implementation and sustainment, and maintaining a dynamic knowledge base of the overall technical architecture to ensure that the application and infrastructure is as efficient and productive as possible.

 

Sustainment Support Manager Job Duties

Sustainment Support Managers supervise the maintenance and development of the product sustainment and software support team, as well as ensuring adequate training, assigning tasks, executing projects or handling various operations. Often delegating duties, sustainment support managers are ultimately responsible for the performance of systems and employees. The sustainment support manager works directly with the core product team as the technical liaison for software and technology issues that need to be escalated to the core development and engineering team.  In addition, this position ensures that the company coding standards and/or best practices for the development are met among utility coding sustainment support resources and participates in the implementation of continuous improvement processes and methodologies.

 

Some common functions of a sustainment support manager include:

  • Coordinating projects
  • Implementing new software and technologies
  • Oversee database administration for sustainment activities
  • Training subordinate and management staff
  • Providing guidance for technical problems and questions
  • Assists and performs code reviews
  • Providing technical diagnosis and resolution for software application issues (Bugs / Hot Fixes)
  • Oversee the setup and maintenance of staging / test environments
  • Reproduce problems and support automated test runs
  • Participating in business meetings

Educational and Skills Requirements

This position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or computer systems engineering a similar field. A master's degree with a technology-related emphasis, is extremely attractive. Prefer familiarity or expertise with geospatial software or technical resources utilized within both mobile and cloud environments. Certification in business management is also beneficial. Several years' experience in the technology or management fields is required for the sustainment support manager position.
